Five ideas to help you enjoy reading:
- Allow yourself to read whatever you want! If you’ve only been read non-fiction, pick up a novel! If you can guess all the mysteries, try something in the sci-fi genre. If aliens aren’t your thing, have a look at the historical novels. There’s so much out there. Put your child-eyes back on and explore! Just don’t keep doing the same thing and expecting different results.
- Don’t force yourself into big goals (at first): Maybe start out by saying, “I’ll read the first page and if I’m not interested, I’ll put it back.” Don’t feel like you have to make yourself finish every book you start (that’s what really discouraged me) – if the book is boring you, try something else! Don’t make yourself read long chapters; this will make your brain call back to the school days when you had a deadline. Rather, start by trying to just read one page a day (or one sentence–one word–one letter!). If it’s fun, you’ll keep reading, right?
- Don’t worry about what others think about what you’re reading: There are some people who say they never read fiction, others say they never read non-fiction. Don’t worry about pleasing other people with what you’re reading. Read for yourself. If you know that the book is uplifting/good/enjoyable for you, then have fun with it. Fair enough?
- Create a reading place: This is critical critical critical code red! Especially for those just getting into reading or trying to rekindle (maybe you should buy a kindle?) their love for it, creating a reading nook (or maybe a nook?) can really help. How do you create a reading place? Have a reading chair. Keep anything distracting away from the reading chair (phones, remote, TV). Be sure to have something nice to drink, good lighting, and a comfortable room temperature.
- Find some people who like to read what you like: There are some great blogs, Youtube channels, and book clubs that discuss everything books. If you’re struggling to stay motivated, sometimes finding like-minded people can help. And it can be fun to see what other people thought of the same book you read.
